You can't end breast cancer by sitting on the sidelines! That's why we need you to register today for the 2018 Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure®! For the past 20 years, families and friends have been coming together for our Race to show the world that we can conquer this disease. We’re making real progress and making a real impact in the lives of women living in Central Virginia. Help us keep that momentum going. Whether you walk, run or just enjoy the fresh air and celebratory atmosphere, the Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure is a beautiful way to spend the morning, and we would love to see you there on Saturday, May 12. February is American Heart Month, and what do heart health and breast cancer survivorship have in common? Join us on Friday, February 16 to find out! Thanks to the generosity of our Survivor Sponsor Bon Secours Health System, Komen Central Virginia is excited to introduce “Komen Conversations,” an educational series tailored to the unique needs and concerns of breast cancer survivors. Hosted by our own Komen Central Virginia Survivor Committee, each event will allow survivors, co-survivors, family members, and individuals at risk for developing breast cancer to hear from local experts from Bon Secours who will speak to topics relevant to the survivor experience, such as advancements in breast health care, long-term and late effects of treatment, nutrition for the breast cancer survivor, complimentary therapies, and more! Please join us for our first “Komen Conversations” Lunch & Learn on Friday, February 16 at noon at the Bon Secours Cancer Institute at St. Francis Medical Center, featuring Dr. Billy Irvin, MD, who will present on “Long-term and Late Effects of Breast Cancer Treatment.” Dr. Irvin is the Medical Director of Medical Oncology, Virginia and the Director of Clinical Research for the Bon Secours Cancer Institute. Complimentary box lunches will be provided. Come meet fellow survivors and engage in thoughtful conversation. Reserve your seat today by calling (804) 320-1772 or emailing info@komencentralva.org.
Since the 1990s, deaths from breast cancer have decreased by nearly 40%. The reasons for this are (1) better screening (e.g., mammography) and (2) better treatments. A 40% decrease is good, but not good enough. Unfortunately, most metastatic disease (breast cancer that has spread to other organs) is treatable, but not curable in 2018, and 1 in 5 breast cancer patients will die of their breast cancer. This is why research is key, and clinical trials are a critical resource in the discovery of new prevention, diagnostic, and treatment methods for cancer. Most of today’s most effective prevention and treatment modalities are based on previous clinical trial results. Clinical trials are an opportunity to provide “tomorrow’s treatment today.” At Bon Secours, we are excited to be able to offer 13 different clinical trials in breast cancer alone, including 7 for triple negative breast cancer. Clinical trials are an important tool to try to reduce the risk of breast cancer returning, to improve the quality of life of our patients, and to treat metastatic disease. For more information about clinical trials that may be of interest to you, please speak with your doctor, or visit www.clinicaltrials.gov or www.clinicaltrialsva.com. William J. Irvin, Jr., M.D.
Our Race Teams are MORE THAN PINK™! You likely already have friends, coworkers, and family members who are passionate supporters of the breast cancer cause. Race for the Cure® is your chance to take action and show that you are all More Than Pink™! Form a team in honor or in memory of someone you know who has been impacted by breast cancer, or simply to help make a difference—together. Our teams are the backbone of the Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure. They make up over 60% of our Race participants and raise more than 80% of the Race donations. Our teams drive the fundraising that allows us to provide grant funding to local organizations where women in our community receive the services needed to detect and survive breast cancer and to fund breast cancer research that will find the cures.
