Tutu Banner

Your support of the Central Virginia Race for the Cure® helps fund all the great work that we do in our community. And, the Race has always been a unique way to celebrate Komen’s mission and our wonderful breast cancer survivors. Help us make the Race even MORE unique this year by showing your support with a tutu! Here’s how:

First, register for the Race. The 2014 Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure is on Saturday, May 10. This year's Race is our 17th annual Race, and we need you there to make this year's Race awesome!

Second, make your tutu. If you are going to tutu with us, you're going to need a tutu! Here's a link to quick and easy instructions on how to make a NO SEW tutu.

Third, join the fun and tell us why YOU tutu! Tell us why you Race and why, from your perspective, the funds raised by the Race are vital to our community. Send us a picture of yourself wearing a tutu and holding a sign that tells why YOU tutu. Post your picture on Facebook or Twitter using hashtag #DoYouTutu or #ITutuBecause. You can create your own sign or use one of our templates.

Fourth, wear a tutu to the Race! If you plan to wear a costume on Race day, make it a tutu! While tutus or any costumes are optional, we would love to see the tutu become a symbol of our support for those in our community who have been affected by breast cancer.

Volunteers Needed for the Race for the Cure®

2013 volunteers

Staffing the Race for the Cure is quite a task. It takes about 500 volunteers to make sure the t-shirts are picked up, the tents on Brown's Island are ready, and the medals, bananas and water are handed out after the Race.

So many of you have already signed up to help with this year's Race, and we thank you! Now, please recruit your family and friends to help make this year's Race the most successful yet.

Signing up to volunteer is easy with our online sign up. Or, call Maggie at (804) 320-1772. Click here to check out the Race volunteer opportunities.

2014 March - Grantee Spotlight - Augusta Regional Free Clini

The “Recognition-Accountability-Coordination-Education (RACE)” program emphasizes the need for preventive care, assists patients with scheduling medical appointments and mammograms, and provides breast health education to 1,500 low income, uninsured women aged 40-64 residing in Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. Thanks to Komen funding, 350 women in Augusta County will receive clinical breast exams and will be referred for mammograms this year.

For more information about the clinic’s grant program, contact: Margaret Hersh at afreeclinic@ntelos.net or 540-332-5611. For more information about Augusta Regional Free Clinic, visit www.augustafreeclinic.org.

2014 March - Community Partner Spotlight - Zeta Tau Alph

Twenty two years ago, Zeta Tau Alpha became the founding sponsor of the Survivor Recognition Program that takes place during Komen’s Race for the Cure events across the country. The idea of honoring survivors at the Race was conceived by breast cancer survivor and Komen board member Ellen Barnett in 1992. While the Survivor Program has evolved through the years with financial and volunteer support from ZTA, it still symbolizes Ellen’s vision for the celebration of life and survivorship. ZTA representatives from across the U.S. work with Komen Affiliates to provide volunteers and give members the opportunity to support their national philanthropy - breast cancer education and awareness.

In 2013, ZTA volunteers helped celebrate more than 400 breast cancer survivors at the Central Virginia Race for the Cure. Be sure to stop by and thank the dedicated ZTA volunteers at their tent on Brown’s Island at this year’s Race for the Cure, Saturday, May 10!
