The Power of Pink

2015 survivor celebration - table 6

This past Saturday, we kicked off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with our annual Survivor Celebration at The Jefferson Hotel. This event is important, because it reminds us of what pink is truly all about. It’s about raising awareness of the disease and the importance of good breast health, raising funds to support those fighting the disease and fueling the research that will one day find the cures, celebrating our breast cancer survivors and those who support them, and remembering those who have lost their battle to the disease.

Since 1982, five-year relative survival rates for early stage breast cancers have climbed from 74 percent to nearly 99 percent in the U.S. Breast cancer death rates have declined by 34 percent in the U.S. in just the past two decades. Personalized and less-invasive treatments have replaced the radical and often debilitating treatments that were the norm not that long ago.

These advancements were made possible thanks in part to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, organizations like Susan G. Komen, and pink.

As you see all the pink this month, we hope it will inspire you to join us in our mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever. It's exciting to imagine what pink can do!

This October, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we challenge you to turn AWARENESS into ACTION. Here are a few steps to empower you or someone you love in the fight against breast cancer:

know your normal t-shirt1. Know your Risk.

  • Talk to both sides of your family to learn more about your family health history.
  • Talk to your provider about your personal risk for breast cancer.

2. Discuss with your doctor which screening tests may be right for you.

  • Sign up for your screening reminder here.

3. Know your normal.

  • Be aware of how your breasts look and feel, and report any changes to your health care provider.*

4. Make healthy lifestyle choices.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Add exercise to your routine.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Limit menopausal hormone use.
  • Breastfeed, if you can.

*Due to the use of regular mammography screening, most breast cancers in the U.S. are found at an early stage, before signs appear. However, not all breast cancers are found through mammography. The warning signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women. To learn more about the warning signs and symptoms of breast cancer, click here.

Komen's Leadership in Breast Cancer Research

research purple circleSusan G. Komen is proud to be the world’s largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research. We recently announced new grants to 124 researchers in 25 states and eight countries internationally, with about half of the grants targeted to early-career researchers squeezed by stagnation in federal research dollars.

This year’s research slate brings Komen’s total research investment to more than $889 million since 1982, the largest of any nonprofit, and second only to the U.S. government.

Grants from Komen’s nearly $36 million research portfolio – including more than $17.6 million in grants awarded to early-career investigators – span the entire cancer continuum from prevention to treatments for aggressive and metastatic disease. These include:

  • 36 grants to improve understanding of metastatic breast cancer
  • 18 grants investigating how tumors develop drug resistance
  • 19 grants related to the study of triple negative breast cancer
  • 15 grants working to identify and understand biological and socio-economic health inequities
  • 13 grants seeking to develop new and novel therapies

A full list of Komen's 2015 research grants can be found here.

In addition to funding breast cancer research, Komen has invested more than $1.95 billion into community health outreach and global programs that serve hundreds of thousands of women and men annually through breast cancer health and support programs that screen, educate, and provide financial, medical, and psychosocial assistance.
