What Are Benign Breast Conditions?

doctor and patientThe terms “benign breast conditions,” “benign breast diseases,” or “fibrocystic change” describe many noncancerous disorders that can affect the breast. Some benign breast conditions can cause discomfort or pain and need treatment, while others need no medical treatment. Many breast conditions mimic the symptoms of cancer and need tests - and sometimes a biopsy - for diagnosis. Though the thought of breast cancer is scary, most biopsies in the U.S. find benign breast conditions not to be cancer.

Benign breast conditions can occur in both women and men and differ from each other in how the cells look under a microscope. If you are diagnosed with a benign breast condition, or are told you have a fibrocystic change, it is important to find out which type you have. Grantee Spotlight:  Heart of Virginia

2013 February - Heart of VirginiaThe “Breast Health Program” at the Heart of Virginia Free Clinic provides breast cancer screenings, breast health education, and referrals to follow up care for uninsured women ages 40-64 living in the Piedmont Health District. Breast health educational programs will be conducted for community and faith groups. The goal of the grant program is to reduce mortality from breast cancer by increasing the number of women who are diagnosed at an early stage.

For more information about the program contact Pat Payne at 434-315-5701 or heartofvirginiafreeclinic@yahoo.com.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Jan Benesh

2013 February - Jan BeneshJan Benesh first participated in the Race for the Cure in 2006, alongside her friend Marilyn, who had breast cancer. After Marilyn lost her battle a few years later, Jan realized how important early detection was and decided to join the mission of Komen Central Virginia to save lives. Jan has honored her friend’s life through the years by volunteering for the Race, serving on the Race Committee, and co-chairing the Affiliate Survivor Committee.

Working with others in the fight against breast cancer and seeing the amazing results are Jan’s favorite aspects of volunteering for Komen. She especially enjoys planning the annual Survivor Celebration and seeing so many brave women who have fought and survived breast cancer. In the accompanying photo, Jan is showing off her stylish vintage clothing at the most recent Survivor Celebration. It is apparent from the photo that Jan brings lots of fun and laughter to the work we do to save lives in our community.
