What Is the Impact of Your Race Participation?

survivors with borderFor 15 years, YOUR participation in the Race for the Cure® has had a tremendous impact on our community. Thank you for Racing to raise awareness for the importance of breast health, to raise funds for breast health programs and research, and to honor those who have battled breast cancer in our community.

With your help last year, Komen Central Virginia funded 5,623 services - 3,439 clinical breast exams, 1,766 mammograms, 418 diagnostic services - as well as provided breast health education to thousands.

This year, we're funding $535,502 in community grants and donating over $200,000 to national research. Your grassroots commitment to our work made this possible.

Will we be able to do the same next year? Not without your help. Be a part of our Sweet 16 Celebration and support our Race for the Cure on May 11 at Brown’s Island.

What the Race Means to Me: A Survivor's Perspective

heather and andrewMay 2004 was my first Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure after being diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2003. I was 40 years old with a 5 and 7 year old and going through a divorce. As I walked across the bridge to Brown's Island in my pink survivor shirt, I had a huge lump in my throat not knowing what to expect and feeling very conspicuous in that pink shirt. To my delight I found the most inspiring and uplifting event I had ever witnessed! Those other pink shirts were smiling, laughing, embracing, and very much celebrating! And I was ONE of them! Now it's an annual celebration and reunion with those pink shirted survivors and everyone that support us and the cause!

How Many Volunteers Are Needed for the Race?

volunteers with borderAny guesses? It takes about 500 volunteers to ensure the Race for the Cure® is a spectacular event! Each year, we are thankful for the hundreds of volunteers who devote their time, energy, and talent to help us pull off a smooth Race.

Race volunteers help with a broad list of needs. Some help Race participants find their way to Brown's Island and the Race Start Line. Some pamper our survivors in the Survivor VIP Tent. Some cheer on the runners and walkers and hand out medals at the Finish Line. Some motivate Race participants to take an active role in their own breast health. And some pass out thousands of bananas and water to nourish Race participants after the Race.

Whatever your interests and talents are, we have a Race volunteer role for you! Click here to check out the Race for the Cure® volunteer opportunities.

Grantee Spotlight:  VCU Massey Cancer Center - Check It Out

2013 April - Grantee Spotlight - VCU Check It OutSince 1999, the Check It Out® program has educated thousands of students in the Richmond area about breast health, local health services, and the importance of early detection of breast and testicular cancer. The collaborative program between Massey Cancer Center and Hadassah conducts interactive, educational sessions in local high schools. Massey Cancer Center nurses, Hadassah volunteers, and survivors present culturally appropriate educational materials, videos, and personal stories of survivorship. The program plans to reach 3,000 women by continuing services in the Richmond area high schools, expanding into the Tri-Cities schools, and adding local women’s correctional and detention centers.

For more information about the program contact Polly Cole at 804-628-1905 or pacole@vcu.edu. For more information about the VCU Massey Cancer Center, visit www.massey.vcu.edu.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Meredith Beadles

2013 April - Volunteer Spotlight - Meredith BeadlesMeredith Beadles was 15 years old when her mother died of breast cancer in 1999. A few years later when she shared her story with Komen National, Meredith was selected as a Komen College Scholarship Award winner. She began volunteering with the Central Virginia Affiliate because she “was looking for a way to give back and honor her (mother’s) memory.” Meredith volunteers because she enjoys “seeing so many lives touched by Komen’s volunteers and its grant funding.”

Meredith joined the Affiliate Board in 2006 and has served as the Education Committee Chair, Vice President, and most recently, as President. Over the past decade, she has been instrumental in furthering the Affiliate’s educational outreach - especially the Worship in Pink program – and advocating for women’s breast health. As Meredith transitions off the Affiliate Board to take care of her growing family, everyone at Komen wishes her all the best and thanks her for touching our lives.
