Participating in the Susan G. Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure® with a team increases the fun, the laughter, and maybe even the tears you share on Race day.

And our teams are the backbone of our Race. Each year, about 60% of our Race participants are on a team. And, on average, about 75% of the funds raised by the Race are brought in by team members. Their Race participation helps us do so much good work in our community

Teams are formed for many reasons. Team Joanne's Garden Club was formed to honor the memory of our Race founder’s mother who lost her battle with breast cancer. Team Cutillo Cruisers was formed 13 years ago and this year, finds itself walking in honor of one its long-time team members, Suzie Vaughn. Suzie was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2013, but according to Suzie, she is strong, she is a fighter, and she is positive there will be a cure someday. And there’s Team Deb who walks to honor Debbie Gay, a mother of 3, wife, memaw, daughter, friend, and (in their team captain’s opinion) the most important lady in the world.

We invite you to join these teams at the 2014 Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure this year on May 10. Who will your team honor?

Community Partner Spotlight - Guardian Angels

2014 April - Community Partner Spotlight - Guardian Angels

Three years ago, Jo White and Tommy Cox of the Richmond Chapter of the Guardian Angels were inspired to raise awareness of breast cancer after going door to door in Baltimore neighborhoods to talk with residents. To replicate the project in Richmond, the Guardian Angels convened representatives from local hospitals, free clinics, churches, and breast cancer organizations, including Komen Central Virginia. Working together, the coalition led by the Guardian Angels recruited churches to serve as hosts on Walk Day, created event resources, and provided Komen Educator training to the Walk volunteers. On June 2, 2012, the first Time to Live Walk was launched from five Richmond churches. About a thousand homes were visited by volunteer walkers, who distributed Komen educational materials and information about accessing breast health resources.

Saturday, June 7 will mark the third annual Time to Live Walk in Richmond. This year, the Guardian Angels and their partners hope that through seven churches,  3,000 households will receive the message of early detection and hope. Komen Central Virginia is proud to support this door to door effort to share breast cancer information in city neighborhoods. To learn more about the Walk, visit the web site.  2014 April - Grantee Spotlight - CrossOver Ministry

The “Breast Health Initiative” improves access to breast health services through two clinic sites for more than 2,000 low income, uninsured women in the Richmond area by providing breast cancer screenings, referrals for mammograms and diagnostic testing, culturally competent treatment for breast conditions, and breast cancer education. Thousands of women in the community will also receive breast health education through CrossOver’s Lay Health Promoter program. Komen Central Virginia is proud to support CrossOver Ministry in its efforts to ensure all women have access to breast health care.

For more information about the clinic’s grant program, contact Julie Bilodeau at jbilodeau@crossoverministry.org or 804-422-2600. For more information about CrossOver Ministry, visit www.crossoverministry.org
