2015 Race - everyday heroes banner

There's a hero in all of us. We are reminded of this every day by the husband of a survivor who stays strong even when his wife has to endure chemo, the best friend who drives a survivor to every doctor appointment, and the breast cancer survivor who will not let the disease diminish her spirit and will to fight no matter what. They are all everyday heroes in our eyes.

Be a hero and help us save lives. Help us by volunteering, donating, or participating. Join us on Saturday, May 9 for the 18th Annual Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure®.

Make sure to take advantage of the early bird discount. Sign up before January 31 for a $10 discount! It's never too early to form a team. If you sign up now, the entire team can register at the early bird price.

Recruit all the everyday heroes you know, and help us do heroic things in our community.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Lakesha Johnson

2015 January - Volunteer Spotlight - Lakesha Johnson

Although Lakesha did not have family members who had been affected by breast cancer, she did lose a childhood mentor to the disease. As an educator and community advocate, Lakesha’s mentor was a great example of the person she wanted to be in life. By volunteering with Komen, Lakesha feels that she is able to give back in some small way to this person who made a huge impact on her teenage years.

Lakesha had always heard great things about the Komen organization from her colleagues at PricewaterhouseCoopers. When the opportunity presented itself to volunteer in a way that aligned with her talents and strengths, Lakesha was “more than thrilled to join the organization.” Since April 2013, she has served as the Affiliate Board Treasurer/Secretary.  Lakesha especially enjoys working with very talented, passionate individuals and knowing the true impact that the Komen grants program has on the community.

Komen Central Virginia is grateful for Lakesha’s passion and her financial expertise. We know that your mentor would be truly honored by your commitment to saving lives from breast cancer.
