2015 Race - everyday heroes banner

What are you doing on Saturday, May 9? We'll be celebrating our heroes at the 18th Annual Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure®.

Every May, mothers, sisters, husbands, friends, co-workers, team captains, team members, doctors, fundraisers, sponsors, and volunteers assemble on Brown's Island to make an impact in our fight against breast cancer. They are our everyday heroes.

Race Day brings us something even more special. Our breast cancer survivors - our SUPERHEROES - assemble at the Race and celebrate their survivorship. There are smiles, tears, and lots of hugs. Their strength and unwavering willingness to survive even in the face of adversity is an inspiration to us all.

We invite you to be a hero and help us save lives. Strap on your cape and come celebrate with us on Saturday, May 9. You too can be a #KomenHero.

Calling all SUPERHEROES - Our Breast Cancer Survivors

2014 survivors

At this year's Race, we will celebrate our heroes - those who stand with us in the fight against breast cancer. And we need you - our breast cancer survivors and our superheroes - to be there as the most important part of the celebration.

As a breast cancer survivor superhero, you’ll enjoy a $5 registration discount (register with discount code SURVIVOR), a special survivor t-shirt, VIP parking, and many other things we’ve planned especially for you. Join us for an early breakfast at 7:30 AM in the VIP Survivor Tent on Brown’s Island. Spend time with other survivors and be treated like the superhero you are. Again this year, we will celebrate your collective years of survivorship with a group photo and celebration that everyone can participate in and enjoy. Assembly for the Survivor Foto & Frolic will be at the Stone Steps on Brown’s Island at 7:45 AM.

Our breast cancer survivors are the heart and soul of our Race! So, please be there to make incredible memories and help make the Race all that it can be!

2015 March - Volunteer Spotlight - Melissa Damiano & Lyn

At the end of March, Lynn Kirk and Melissa Damiano’s board terms come to an end. We would like to thank both for their numerous contributions to Susan G. Komen Central Virginia!

Lynn is a breast cancer survivor who joined our board six years ago shortly after her diagnosis. She ends her term as President of the Board. During her tenure, she shared her wisdom, leadership, and a wealth of marketing and communications knowledge. Lynn has been a strong voice for survivors in our community.

Melissa began volunteering with Komen Central Virginia many years ago as coordinator for our many partner fundraising events. She brought leadership to help us manage and grow these events. She has even lent her skills as a Master Gardener creating beautiful floral arrangements for our events. We are grateful for all the community relationships Melissa created and nurtured during her term.

We hope that neither stray far, and that they will continue to be involved with Komen Central Virginia in some way going forward. In the meantime, we would like to thank them for sharing their talents with us to further our mission in Central Virginia. You have both been excellent leaders and board members.

Community Partner Spotlight:  Ron Kirk

Kody's

We are pleased to congratulate our Race for the Cure Presenting Sponsor, Richmond Ford owner Ron Kody, who recently received the prestigious Salute to Dealers Award from Ford Motor Company. He was chosen because of his generous commitment to the local community through his support of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Susan G. Komen Central Virginia, and other organizations in the area. Only three dealers in the U.S. received this award. We are proud to be one of Richmond Ford’s community partners.
