We Live Here. We Race Here. We Save Lives Here.

Consider what this means to our community. Last year, with your help, Komen Central Virginia awarded $535,502 in community grants to provide breast health services and education to those in need. That's over 5,000 screenings and treatments covered and over 12,000 educated in breast health.

The majority of the funds we raise for these grant programs comes directly from your Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure® participation and fundraising. The Race for the Cure exemplifies our community bond, connection, and commitment.

This year's Race for the Cure is on Saturday, May 10. Won't you please register and help us run breast cancer out of town? When you register to Race, you're registering to save a life. Your participation supports women and families who need our help today, and funds the research that will find the cure.

2014 January - Volunteer Spotlight - Katrina Forrest

It’s all in the family! Katrina Forrest was first encouraged to volunteer for Komen by her sister and former Affiliate Board member Mary Clark. In 2011, Katrina joined the Grants Committee and later served as its Chair. Today, like her sister, Katrina is a member of the Affiliate Board and leads the Strategic Mission Committee, which is responsible for directing the Affiliate’s grant, education, and public policy efforts.

So, why are two sisters so passionate about breast cancer? Their maternal grandmother passed away from breast cancer at a time when doctors did not see the need for chemotherapy after surgery. Had current advances in medicine been available then, their grandmother’s breast cancer may not have metastasized.

An attorney and busy mother of three boys, Katrina enjoys meeting breast cancer survivors and their families and working with people that are dedicated to saving lives. Katrina also says, “As someone who loves to learn, but who is not involved in the medical field, I love learning about the advances being made and the lives being saved with the money raised by our organization.”

Komen Central Virginia is thankful for Katrina’s perspective and her dedication to improving the future for those who may face a breast cancer diagnosis.
