What Is the Impact of Your Race Participation?

2013 Rhonda GayOn May 11, together we stood up to breast cancer. What a powerful day!

Our thanks go out to every volunteer, donor, sponsor, and participant who made our 16th Anniversary Race for the Cure a success. Together more than 5,500 participants helped us raise over $450,000. Those funds will be invested in our community through grants that provide breast health education, screening, and treatment to our underserved neighbors. Additionally, a portion of those funds will be invested in cutting edge breast cancer research.

We will accept donations for the 2013 Race for the Cure through the end of June. With your help, we can have an even greater impact in Central Virginia. Our Breast Cancer Survivors were our inspiration on Race Day and they always remind us – there is so much more to do. Help us finish strong!

Family History and Risk of Breast Cancer

DNAWith recent news about family history and breast cancer, it is important to know that only about five to 10 percent of female breast cancers in the U.S. are thought to be due to inherited gene mutations. BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer genes 1 and 2) are the most well-known genes linked to breast cancer risk. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations can be passed to you through your mother’s or father’s side of the family and can affect the risk of both female and male cancers. Up to 40 percent of male breast cancers may be related to BRCA2 mutations.

Like other gene mutations, BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations are rare in the general population. In the U.S., between one in 400 and one in 800 people in the general population carry a BRCA mutation. However, prevalence varies by ethnic group. Among Ashkenazi Jewish men and women, about one in 40 carry a BRCA mutation. Grantee Spotlight:  Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department

2013 June - Grantee Spotlight - Charlottesville-Albemarle HeThe Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department works collaboratively to train community health navigators from the local Hispanic community to share breast health information with their peers, direct them to services, and provide support to those who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Komen Central Virginia is pleased to partner with the health department in its efforts to improve access to breast care for Latinas in the Charlottesville area.

For more information about the program, contact Elizabeth Beasley at 434-972-6232 or elizabeth.beasley@vdh.virginia.gov. For more information about the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department, visit www.vdh.virginia.gov/lhd/thomasjefferson.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Alison Nunn

2013 June - Volunteer Spotlight - Alison NunnEnergized by participating in the Komen 60 mile, 3-Day Walk in Philadelphia, Alison Nunn spotted the opening for a volunteer Race intern in Richmond and applied. Since February, Alison has worked a full time job while providing critical behind-the-scenes volunteer support for the Race for the Cure. For three months, she tirelessly completed countless phone calls, mailings, data entry, and visits to local merchants to ensure a successful Race on May 11.

Alison says she enjoyed working closely with the Komen Central Virginia office and learning more about what happened on a daily basis. She met a lot of great people from the community who are involved with Komen and noted a deep sense of spirit and unity among them. With a Bachelor’s degree in social work, Alison would like to eventually work in the field of breast cancer awareness and advocacy.

When asked what inspires her work, Alison’s response echoes the Komen promise that we all work to keep: “I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was five. It is my greatest hope that through the efforts of those like Komen, one day no little girl will have to go through that.”

Thank you, Alison, for your generosity, spirit, and commitment to saving lives from breast cancer.
