The Surprising Benefits of Volunteering

2013 volunteers

Did you know that volunteering benefits not only the organization but the volunteer as well?

HelpGuide.org states that “The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Volunteering can also help protect your mental and physical health.”

As we close out the summer and prepare for an exciting breast cancer awareness month in October, consider spending some time volunteering with us! If you are a new volunteer or have volunteered in the past but would like a refresher, join us at our Komen Educator Training on Saturday, September 6 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Then visit the volunteer section of our website and check your email for upcoming volunteer opportunities, like our Survivor Celebration in October!

We look forward to working with you!

2014 July - Volunteer Spotlight - Sohpia & Zoe

Two of our favorite young volunteers are the dynamic sister duo, Sophia and Zoe. Each summer, they volunteer in our office and help us get organized. This year, they completely revamped our Race storage room cleaning things up, getting rid of old stuff, and organizing things so we know what we have. Before they did their thing, you couldn’t even walk in the room. Now, the floor is clear, everything has a home, and each box is labeled (most with a heart or smiley face on them thanks to Zoe).

Sophia, the older of the two, wanted to get involved with Komen and the fight against breast cancer because her grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. She enjoys the feeling she gets when she volunteers for a cause she believes in. It makes her feel like she’s made a difference and done something worthwhile. Sophia not only volunteers with us in the office, she is also a part of our Teen Advisory Board and helps present the In Color Station at our Race for the Cure®.

Zoe wanted to get involved with Komen because a lot of women and even some men have breast cancer and it is important to her that we find a cure. One of her favorite things to do while volunteering with us is to prepare educational materials, especially the Breast Self-Awareness cards. This is a tremendous help to us as we prepare to meet the community’s needs during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

They may be small, but they are mighty! And, we are so grateful for all that they do in support of Komen.
