2015 Race thank you survivor pic - small

On May 9, everyday heroes from all across Central Virginia converged on Brown’s Island to Race for the Cure. What a great day it was!

We would like to again thank all those who were there to stand beside us in the fight against breast cancer, whether a co-survivor, sponsor, donor, Race participant, caregiver, friend or volunteer. We would also like to extend a special thanks to all the breast cancer survivors who allowed us to honor and celebrate them on Race Day. You are and will always be our superheroes.

Sean DeWitt Photography captured some great Race Day moments. His pictures are available for download or purchase from the Sean DeWitt website. We've also posted quite a few Race pictures on our Facebook page.

Thanks, and we hope to see you at next year's Race!

Help Us Finish Strong

The Race for the Cure is our largest fundraiser each year. Funds raised support our neighbors who face a diagnosis of breast cancer. Through the generosity shown at this event, we will be able to add significantly to the more than $7 million that Komen Central Virginia has been able to contribute over 17 years to fund community grants and research.

We would like to thank and recognize the Top 10 Fundraising Teams and Individuals.

2015 Race Top 10s as of June 9, 2015

Knowing how passionate you are about helping us finish the fight against breast cancer, we're asking you to help us reach our 2015 goal. We’re just 7% away from our goal of $400,000. Additional donations to the 2015 Race for the Cure can be made at http://bit.ly/2015RaceDonate.

Remember, up to 75% of Komen’s net revenue is used to support local community based education, screening, and treatment programs. The remaining 25% of the net income supports the Susan G. Komen® Grants Program (scientific research grants).

Science Buzz! Inflammation: A New Link Between Lifestyle and Breast Cancer Outcomes

2015 article on inflamation

Can lifestyle affect breast cancer outcomes?

There are many studies showing that lifestyle factors like diet, weight, and physical activity affect breast cancer risk. However, little is known about how these factors affect breast cancer recurrence (when breast cancer comes back) and survival. Even though survival rates for breast cancer are high, many women may experience recurrence 5, 10, and even 15 years after their initial diagnosis.

Understanding how lifestyle factors affect breast cancer recurrence is critical for improving long-term survival of breast cancer patients. Through his Komen-funded research, Dr. John Pierce, Professor at the University of California, San Diego, has begun to uncover the links between lifestyle factors and breast cancer outcomes. He believes he has found a culprit: inflammation. Learn more >>
