Come Celebrate with Us!

2012 High Heel DashWe are kicking off the Race for the Cure® season with a brand new event, the 1st Annual Saxon Shoes High Heel Dash! We invite you to strap on your best heels and come to The Innsbrook Shoppes in Glen Allen at 3 p.m. on March 10 for a 50 yard dash. Prizes will be awarded to our First Place Winner and Best Dressed. We will also be auctioning off some specially decorated heels – designed by Melissa Chase, NBC12, the Richmond Kickers, the Richmond Ballet, Science Museum of Virginia and others. Registration for the dash is only $10.  Click here to register online.  You may also register in person at the event. Spectators are encouraged, at no charge.

2012 Early the BirdAlso – remember that Early Bird Registration is open now for the 15th Annual Central Virginia Race for the Cure® which will happen on May 12 at Brown’s Island. Early Bird registration fees only last through March 10 – so take advantage of our reduced rates and start your team now. We will be at the High Heel Dash to help you take advantage of your last chance to register at the Early Bird rates.  Click here to register.

Since our humble beginnings in 1998, the community has helped us to raise over $6 million to provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment for underserved men and women in the area, as well as contributions to cutting edge research that will one day find the cure. We can’t do it without YOU – so thanks for your continued support.

Announcing the Small Grants Program

Komen Central Virginia along with P.I.N.K.K., the Komen Central Virginia Young Professionals Committee, is proud to announce the establishment of our new Small Grants Program. In addition to our annual community grants program, the small grants program will allow us to award grants up to $5,000 for projects that support the funding priorities outlined in our Affiliate Community Profile. Three of a Kind - Not So Lucky in Breast Cancer

However, being dealt a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is not as lucky.  Research shows that TNBC disproportionately affects certain populations of women, including African Americans, younger women, and women who carry a BRCA1 gene mutation. Learn more »

Grantee Spotlight:  Centra-Southside Community Hospital

Centra-SouthsideThe “Piedmont Health District Breast Health Effort” will provide 134 low income, uninsured or underinsured women ages 40-64 living in rural Central Virginia with clinical breast exams and screening mammograms. Women with questionable mammograms will receive case management services and assistance with Medicaid enrollment.  Those ineligible for Medicaid will receive further counseling services and referrals for assistance. Volunteer Spotlight:  Iris Holliday

Iris HollidayIn her own words, Iris Holliday is a happy member of the Affiliate Grants Committee who annually participates in the Race for the Cure by snoozing in her Sleep In t-shirt while others walk for the cause. Iris has had such a good time volunteering for Komen she says she can’t remember when she actually first started! But, we know that Iris has been a very active volunteer since 2006 and most recently planned our annual grantee awards luncheon. Learn more »

"What I Would Have Missed" Contest
March 4 through 18 

Breast cancer affects all of us, whether we have personally battled it or our loved ones have come face to face with the disease.

Tell us what you or someone you love would have missed had they not survived their fight with breast cancer.

Your story could be featured inside the Race for the Cure special publication on Tuesday, April 10, in The Times-Dispatch.

All entrants will have the opportunity to win prizes from La Difference, Lex's of Carytown, Richmond Symphony, and Richmond CenterStage.

Can you run in heels?  On March 10, men and women ages 18 and older are invited to run 50 yards as fast and carefully as possible  to officially help us start the Race for the Cure season.
