Celebrating Survivors & Raising Awareness

2012 Survivor CelbrationOnce again, it is time to celebrate our thriving survivors! On September 28, we will gather for a luncheon at The Jefferson Hotel to laugh, cry, and cheer with breast cancer survivors and their friends, family, and supporters. We never fail to be inspired and motivated by this event.

This year we will enjoy a walk down memory lane to a time when shopping and tea room lunches at Thalhimers and Miller and Rhoads were occasions to remember. Our guest speaker will be Bill Martin, Director of the Valentine Richmond History Center. He will share stories that are sure to take you back in time. The chef at The Jefferson has jumped in enthusiastically to create a nostalgic menu that may just include a six-layer chocolate cake just like the one you could find in Thalhimer's Bakery. If you are so inclined, put on your pearls and hats and join us for an afternoon of feeling nostalgic and pampered. Of course we will conclude with our candlelight salute to survivors – those who keep our eyes on the prize of a world without breast cancer. Don’t wait! Register now.

Running Ribbon 96x96As we head into fall, seas of pink will without doubt let you know that we are approaching Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Remember that pink is a tool to remind us that we should be screened, stay aware of changes in our body, and encourage others to do the same. Pink also serves to remind us how far we have come together. Thirty years ago we didn’t even speak about breast cancer. The prognosis was dim. Together we have raised millions to provide education, screening, treatment, and research.  We have made significant discoveries and experienced dramatic improvement in outcomes. We have come a long way in the years since the color pink has come to represent breast cancer. We still have far to go. As we learn more, we find more that we need to learn. We will not stop until we are living our vision, a world without breast cancer. Thank you for your part in our journey.

High Breast Density Does Not Increae Risk of Breast Cancer Death

While we know that breast density is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer, it does not appear to increase the risk of death among breast cancer patients, according to the results of a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer (other than skin cancer) in US women. Each year, roughly 227,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and close to 40,000 die of the disease.

Breast density refers to the extent of glandular and connective tissue in the breast. Breasts with more glandular and connective tissue—and less fat—are denser. Breast density can be assessed by mammography.  Read more »

2012 September - Grantee Spotlight - Access NowThe "Patient Care Coordination" program provides access to treatment for breast cancer for women throughout the Richmond area who are poor, have no insurance, and do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid.  Patients receive primary care at local safety net clinics and are referred to Access Now when specialty care is needed. Volunteer Spotlight:  Jonathan Barrille

2012 September - Volunteer Spotlight - Jonathan BarrilleJuggling work and graduate school, Jonathan Barrille still manages to give his time to Komen every month. Jonathan first began volunteering with Komen in 2006 as a recent graduate of James Madison University. He was the manager at Bottegas restaurant when a friend of the family was diagnosed with breast cancer.  He wanted to do something to show that he cared.  So with the help of Judy Adams at Komen Central VA he organized a successful promotion at Bottegas in October with a portion of the proceeds donated to Komen Central Virginia.   Learn more »
