Giving Thanks

thank you swirlWow!  As we look back on the last few weeks, we cannot begin to express the awe and gratitude we feel for the tremendous support you have demonstrated during Breast Cancer Awareness season. When we think about it, we are quite overwhelmed.

Dozens of businesses, school groups, civic organizations, and individuals have organized fundraising and awareness events. Large or small, each effort is precious and valuable to our efforts. You are indeed our Community Partners (see list of Community Partners in the pink sidebar).

In addition to fundraising, we have had volunteers out in the community manning education tables and passing out many thousands of pieces of educational literature – all to raise awareness and promote early detection. Our team of volunteer Educators has been indispensable over the past few weeks. You are much appreciated!

You have made it possible for us to fund 13 grants totaling over $587,000 throughout Central Virginia that provide education, screening and treatment to your communities. We are also able to make a significant contribution to Komen National research grants, which will one day find the cures.

Komen has always been a grassroots organization and you are our grassroots army in the fight against breast cancer. It only works because of your tremendous efforts, but you continue to surprise us year after year with your creativity, commitment, and hard work. It doesn’t seem like enough to say, but THANK YOU!

Grantee Spotlight:  CrossOver Ministry, Richmond

2012 November - CrossOver MinistryThe “Breast Health Initiative“ improves access to breast health services for 2,000 low income, uninsured women in the Richmond area by providing breast cancer screenings, culturally competent treatment for breast conditions, and breast cancer education. CrossOver hopes that their project will inform patients about the importance of regular breast exams and discourage them from skipping important breast health screenings. Komen Central Virginia is proud to partner with CrossOver in providing critical breast health services and education to women in our community.

For more information about the program contact Julie Bilodeau at jbilodeau@crossoverministry.org or 804-426-7710. To learn more about CrossOver Health Ministry, visit www.crossoverministry.org.

Volunteer
Spotlight:  Lynn Lewis

2012 Novemer - Lynn LewisPrior to her involvement with Komen Central Virginia, Lynn Lewis had experienced some abnormal mammograms and minor surgeries.  Thankfully, the results were benign, but the experience raised her awareness of the importance of breast health. In 2008, Lynn signed up for her first Race for the Cure at a community health fair thinking that was the least she could do to support the cause.  Since then, she has continued to participate in the Race, volunteered as a Komen Educator at health fairs, and served as a training facilitator and speaker at many community events. As a member of the Affiliate Education/Volunteer Committee, Lynn has taken on the responsibility for recognizing the members of our large and invaluable volunteer corps.

Lynn says that her commitment to Komen and the fight against breast cancer is a wonderful avenue for her to fulfill her life’s mission of helping women by showing them empathy, encouragement, and inspiration. She especially “enjoys assisting with training new volunteers and engaging the guests who visit Komen information stations at community outings.” Lynn claims that her personal goal is to “get more men and African American women involved.” Komen Central Virginia is grateful to Lynn for her dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. We are also thankful for her husband and biggest supporter – Keith - one of our favorite KoMen!
