Come along as we journey down The Pink Ribbon Road with Carolyn Mustian, local author of Come Monday:  My Journey on The Pink Ribbon Road. Learn from her rollercoaster of emotions and experiences; tears and joy, fears and frustrations, but also laughter, love and opportunities to meet some great people along the way.

Join us on Friday, October 4 from noon to 1:30 PM at the historic Jefferson Hotel for this annual luncheon as we honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors and their families and friends who inspire us throughout the year. Tickets are $25 for breast cancer survivors and $35 for all other guests. Space is limited, so register early.

Grantee Spotlight:  Nueva Vida

2013 September - Grantee Spotlight - Nueva Vida

Nueva Vida’s grant program, “Comprehensive Breast Care Support,” enhances the quality of life and health outcomes of uninsured and underserved Latinas in the Richmond area through collaboration with local health and community institutions. Nueva Vida provides breast cancer education, access to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and end of life care, while offering caring and culturally enhanced expert mental health support to those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Survivorship support addresses the critical needs of women who face their disease far from family and friends, in a foreign environment, and often in poverty.

Komen Central Virginia is proud to partner with Nueva Vida in navigating Latinas to critical breast health services and providing support to women after a diagnosis.

For more information about the Richmond area program, contact Vivian Robles at nvrichmond@nueva-vida.org or 804-267-6066.

For more information about Nueva Vida, visit www.nueva-vida.org.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Yvette Robinson

2013 September - Volunteer Spotlight - Yvette Robinson

Yvette volunteered to serve cake at the Paint It Pink Petersburg kickoff in July 2008 and several months later was training Petersburg residents on the importance of breast health. Over the years, Yvette has worked tirelessly to let the Petersburg community know the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

She has hosted Worship in Pink and Pink Tie events at her church, Tabernacle Baptist. She has talked to the TRIAD seniors and to the homeless about breast health. Through her membership in The Links, she has distributed breast cancer information at WalMart, hair salons, and doctors’ offices. She even drove a Paint It Pink car in the Virginia State University Homecoming Parade to raise awareness! Sharing the importance of breast health with almost everyone she meets, it’s no surprise that Yvette was recently invited to be a Wellness Ambassador for the city of Petersburg.

When asked why she devotes her time to helping others, Yvette says that wellness is important to her and to all women. She adds that her parents raised her to make a difference in the world. Komen Central Virginia is grateful to Yvette for making a difference by saving lives from breast cancer in the Petersburg community.
