National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was a huge success, and we have YOU to thank. Thank you for being part of our family – we appreciate you! Whether you read our stories about friends who are living with metastatic breast cancer, spread awareness to friends and family or held your own fundraiser - we appreciate you for being MORE THANK PINK®.
We want to challenge you to show your support and be MORE THANK PINK® not just during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but all year long, because 113 people die of breast cancer every day. This is why we must be more than cheerleaders. We must become change leaders. Leading change for greater funding, more research at the national level, and stronger support to better serve those in the breast cancer community.
Together, we are strong. Together, we bring hope and support to those facing breast cancer. Together, we’re making progress toward our Bold Goal of reducing the current number of breast cancer deaths by half in the U.S. by 2026.

Komen Announces $26 Million Investment in New Research
Komen recently announced an investment of $26 million to fund 62 new research projects that seek to answer some of the toughest questions facing breast cancer. This new funding is part of our efforts to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S.by 50 percent by 2026 and brings our total research investment to $988 million to date – the largest nonprofit investment outside the U.S. government. “This year, Komen is investing in a number of areas that will help us achieve our bold goal and save lives. We are seeking answers to why our current drugs work for some patients, but not all, or why they work at first, but later become ineffective.” said Komen Chief Scientific Advisor, George Sledge, M.D., Chief of Oncology at Stanford University Department of Medicine. “We are also looking into aggressive forms of the disease like triple negative and inflammatory breast cancer, which tend to have poorer outcomes. By investigating novel techniques and therapies, we hope to bring new treatment options to patients.” The newly announced grants will investigate critical areas in breast cancer research, including (but not limited to) projects focused on one or more of the following:
- Drug Resistance and Metastasis (40 grants, representing 70 percent
of the grants awarded)
- Triple Negative Breast Cancer (23 grants)
- New Treatments (38 grants) such as Immunotherapies (9 grants)
- Health Disparities (8 grants)

Two Girls with Two Ovens Make a Big Impact
Mother/daughter baking duo Carla and Aidyn Mentry held their 8th Annual Think Pink Bake Sale this year at their home in Glen Allen, selling 3,286 treats and raising over $4,400 to benefit Komen Central Virginia.
Aidyn, now 15 and a sophomore at Deep Run High School, and her mother have been baking treats to raise money for the cause since a friend and neighbor was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. They raised $500 the first year and received an anonymous $500 matching gift to bring that year’s total donation to $1,000, and Aidyn’s Caring Cookies was born. To date, Aidyn and Carla have raised nearly $20,000!
Carla shared, “We're a two girl, two oven operation so we prepare for several weeks before the sale. The two of us make each and every treat we sell." Each item is sold for $1. They donate their time and the cost of ingredients so every penny from every item sold is donated. Due to the large number of requests, they have created an online process to handle pre-orders.
Their bestsellers include white chocolate dipped Double Stuf Oreos decorated with pink white chocolate awareness ribbons, pink ribbon shaped sugar cookies, M&M chocolate chip cookies, and salted caramel fudge brownies. Yum!
Aidyn also sells treats via Facebook for other occasions and holidays where she donates 10% of each sale to charity.
Aidyn and Carla, you are an incredible example of the impact each of us can make in the fight against breast cancer. Thank you for sharing your passion for baking to help save lives in our community!
