2016 Survivor Celebration banner

Make plans now to join us for our 11th Annual Survivor Celebration on Friday, September 30. Each year, we gather for a special luncheon to celebrate breast cancer survivors who have been diagnosed, fought through treatment, and come out on the other side surviving and thriving! This is a unique opportunity for survivors, their co-survivors, and guests to network, celebrate, pamper themselves, and support each other during an afternoon at Richmond’s landmark Jefferson Hotel.

This year's speaker is Heidi Floyd, a breast cancer survivor, author, speaker, and advocate. At two months pregnant with her son and happily married with three children (and now four), Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing treatment, she faced the challenges of balancing her faith, her family, her own health, her son’s health, and a full-time workload during an otherwise joyful time in her life. You'll leave the event inspired, after hearing Heidi share her personal experience with breast cancer and her compelling message about the importance of research, support, and compassion.

Tickets are $25 for breast cancer survivors and $35 for all other guests. Tables of 10 may be purchased for $250. This is one of our most popular and inspirational events each year, so don’t wait to get your ticket.

Stories of Discovery: Using Ingenuity and Duct Tape to Improve Breast Cancer Screening

Mammography is good at detecting breast cancer, but it’s not perfect, especially for women with dense breasts. Overall, it can accurately detect breast cancer about 84 percent of the time. But some studies estimate that mammography detects fewer than half of cancers in dense breasts. This is primarily because breast tumors and dense breast tissue look similar on a mammogram, making it difficult to distinguish between them.

A Simple Roll of Duct Tape  Scientists and clinicians have been working for decades to develop better methods for breast cancer screening in women with dense breasts, but Komen-funded researcher Dr. Deborah Rhodes and a team at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, may finally have a solution by using molecular imaging, a technology already used for imaging the heart. Working closely with nuclear physicist Dr. Michael O’Conner, who was instrumental in developing MBI, Dr. Rhodes and the Mayo team used an everyday engineering marvel – duct tape – yes, duct tape – and a bit of ingenuity to modify an existing mammogram machine.

A Big Boost in Accuracy  With her first grant from Komen, Dr. Rhodes and her Mayo colleagues found that molecular breast imaging (MBI) plus mammography was more sensitive than mammography alone, with a 91 percent chance of accurately detecting breast cancer compared to 27 percent with mammography alone. Dr. Rhodes received a second grant from Komen to conduct another clinical trial, with MBI resulting in four times greater accuracy in the diagnosis of breast cancer when compared to using a mammogram alone.

Pink Out logo - horizontal

In honor of a new school year, the Central Virginia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen would like to invite your school community to join us in the fight against breast cancer by hosting a Pink Out event this fall. Each year, schools across Central Virginia partner with Komen to educate about breast health and to engage students in philanthropy as they help raise awareness and funds in support of our mission to end breast cancer forever. With National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, fall sporting events and student activities can be the perfect opportunity to begin this important conversation and empower students to make a difference in our local community. In fact, over the past five years, schools in our service area have raised over $100,000 to help save lives right here in Central Virginia. What an impact!

For more information about Pink Out events, contact us at (804) 320-1772 or info@komencentralva.org.
