Race Team Captains are More Than Pink

teams banner

Teams are the backbone of the Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure. They make up over 60% of our Race participants and raise more than 80% of the Race donations. Our teams drive the fundraising that allows us to provide grant funding to local organizations where women in our community receive the services needed to detect and survive breast cancer and to fund breast cancer research that will find the cures.

You likely already have friends, coworkers and family members who are passionate supporters of the breast cancer cause. Race for the Cure is your chance to take action and show that you are all More Than Pink! Form a team in honor or in memory of someone you know who has been impacted by breast cancer, or simply to help make a difference - together.

A Perfect Storm:
Highlighting Breast Cancer Disparities Among African-American Women

young african american womanOverall, white women are slightly more likely to get breast cancer, but African-American women are more likely to die from it. In fact, breast cancer mortality (death) is roughly 40 percent higher in African-American women than in white women. But why?

Even looking at mortality rates – which have decreased for all women in the U.S. since 1990 – the decrease began earlier and is greater for white women than for African-American women. A recent review of many scientific studies, led by Komen researcher Dr. Funmi Olopade of the University of Chicago and her colleague Dr. Robert Daly, explores the reasons behind these disparities and some possible solutions.

Drs. Olopade and Daly argue that tumor biology and genomics, along with differences in the patterns of care African-American women receive, including delays, misuse, and underuse of breast cancer treatment, lead to this higher mortality rate for African-American women. They also look at possible interventions to close this disparity gap. Find out more in this new reader-friendly article and learn how Komen is working to save lives and ensure every person has access to high-quality breast cancer care.

2017 January - Volunteer Spotlight - Kai Sommer

Over the years, Kai Sommer has known many whose lives were impacted by breast cancer and other cancers. He had a desire to help for some time, and after losing his father to lung cancer in 2014, Kai knew he needed to act. "I’m a father of two daughters and my life has been so positively influenced by many remarkable women. Combating breast cancer - which effects such a disproportionate number of women – is where I wanted to focus my energies,” says Kai. A CPA, Kai joined the Komen Central Virginia Board of Directors two years ago and has served as the chair of its Finance Committee.

Komen is the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding in the fight against breast cancer and through volunteering, Kai feels more connected to some of the incredible research that is going on today. “With so many talented and creative researchers approaching the disease from so many different angles – and with so many new technological advances and ways to share information - it truly feels like we’re on the verge of a major breakthrough.”

Kai also is inspired by Komen Central Virginia’s local impact – where 75% of its mission dollars are spent. He recalls running his first Race for the Cure in downtown Richmond, “As I crossed the Manchester Bridge and looked back at literally thousands of other runners – a river of pink as far as I could see – it hit home how many lives we’re impacting. I’m so proud of the work we do.”

Kai adds, “Of all my experiences at Komen though, what has perhaps affected me most profoundly has been meeting the survivors and their families – and those currently undergoing treatment. These are mostly ‘everyday’ people who have suddenly found themselves fighting for their very lives. I’m so humbled by the courage, love, and grace I’ve seen here.”
