Join Us for the 8th Annual Survivor Celebration

2013 Survivor Celebration - Carolyn MustianPlease join us for the 8th Annual Komen Central Virginia Survivor Celebration. This year's luncheon will be held on Friday, October 4 at the The Jefferson Hotel.

We are pleased to have Carolyn Mustian, author of Come Monday:  My Journey on The Pink Ribbon Road, as our speaker.

Come along as Carolyn shares her journey on The Pink Ribbon Road from her diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Learn from her rollercoaster of emotions and experiences; tears and joy, fears and frustrations, but also laughter, love and opportunities to meet some great people along the way. Laugh with her as she learns to cope with wigs, false eyelashes, falsies, germs and those who unwillingly invade her immunocompromised space. Get some great ideas to encourage others on The Pink Ribbon Road as you learn about Carolyn's journey.

So mark your calendars and make sure to purchase your ticket today (space is limited) and join us for a great luncheon that is sure to be uplifting.

2013 granteesThanks to your donations, fundraising efforts, and volunteer time, Komen Central Virginia is pleased to announce the availability of grant funds for fiscal year 2014. Nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and educational institutions serving the communities in our Affiliate service area are eligible for funding. Applications up to $50,000 are being accepted until August 29, 2013, for community grant programs that reduce breast cancer mortality, especially among those who are disproportionately affected by this disease. Additionally, our small grants program is accepting applications year round for projects up to $5,000.

Volunteer Spotlight: Wendy Schultz

2013 July - Volunteer Spotlight - Wendy SchultzMy involvement with Komen began when a dear friend, Lynn Berry was diagnosed with breast cancer in late fall of 2004. She was a wonderful neighbor and friend with no history of breast cancer in her family. Her diagnosis confirmed what I'd been thinking, we must do something to stop the spread of breast cancer. I decided to be team captain and organize a team in her honor for the Komen Race for the Cure. A great group of friends and family including her three children and husband banded together to form the Berry Bunch team. We have been walking and raising money since race day 2005. Annually, the Friday night before the race, my husband, Bill and I host a party in our home, referred to as the "Berry Bunch Carbo-Loading Pre-race Hydrating party." The star of the evening is Lynn Berry and the celebration of her victory over breast cancer diagnosed nearly 8 years ago. On race day, the team gathers with the Komen faithful to work toward raising awareness and funds to fight this dreadful disease. It's a special day "to support Komen's vision of a world without breast cancer and to promote the promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures."

In addition to serving on the Affiliate Grants Committee and as the Grants Review Chair, I have had the privilege of taking photos at the Grantee Luncheon held in January of each year. The luncheon serves to distribute grant checks to selected recipients that support breast health education, breast cancer screening, and treatment programs in the Central Virginia Affiliate service area. It is a wonderful day to celebrate grantees, fundraisers, and sponsors that have helped raise money in our community and their success in making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. The opportunity to take photos of researchers, volunteers, fundraisers, and others engaged in the fight against breast cancer is an honor.
