Walk with Me
My Story of Faith, Fortitude, and Choosing a Grateful Heart

Hello friends,

2016 March - Kristin HarrisIf the title of this new blog series piqued your interest or spoke to your heart, welcome.

I am Kristin Harris, Executive Director of Komen Central Virginia, but this series is a personal one. At the encouragement of my Komen colleagues, family, and friends, I am endeavoring to pen a heartfelt response here to two of the most frequent questions I receive in both my professional and personal life:

“You must hear some powerful stories in your work. Which ones stand out to you?”

And the big one:  “What is it really like to live with metastatic breast cancer every day?”

So here it is -- my original account of the most inspiring moments in the work we do every day at Susan G. Komen in our mission to save lives from breast cancer. And an honest, authentic reflection of my day-to-day experience living with metastatic breast cancer. Our hope is that my story – our stories – will touch your heart, lift your spirit, offer you courage, or bring you peace. With tales of trial and triumph, we embark on this journey together. Come, dear friends…

Walk with me.

Why We Fundraise

The statistics are staggering...

2018 bc stats

But we can fight these statistics together by fundraising for the Race for the Cure®. We need your help to make the biggest impact possible against breast cancer by raising funds for breast cancer screenings, treatment, and education programs that save lives in our community and also fuel national research programs.

Fundraising is easy with online fundraising tools and social media. When you register for the Race, you automatically receive your own fundraising website, which can be personalized. Your personal Fundraising Center is your starting point for spreading the word and maximizing your fundraising impact. And our Facebook app is a quick and easy way to ask your family and friends to support your efforts.

Komen Conversations - rectangle logo

dr. billy - komen conversationsThanks to the incredible generosity of our Survivor Sponsor Bon Secours Health System, in February, we launched our exciting new educational series, "Komen Conversations." With four programs planned in 2018, we are thrilled to provide survivors, co-survivors, health care professionals, and those at risk for breast cancer an opportunity to connect and share in this important conversation about their unique needs and concerns.

Dr. Billy Irvin, MD, Medical Director of Medical Oncology, Virginia and the Director of Clinical Research for the Bon Secours Cancer Institute, helped us launch the series by presenting on “Long-term and Late Effects of Breast Cancer Treatment.” Thank you to all our attendees for joining us for this inaugural program and for your wonderful feedback. In the words of one attendee, "I loved all the information. Dr. Irvin was super-approachable and helpful."

We would like to say a special thanks to the Komen Central Virginia Survivor Committee for hosting the event, Jason's Deli at Willow Lawn for providing complimentary boxed lunches, and of course, Bon Secours Health Systems and Dr. Irvin for making this event possible.

We hope to see you at the next "Komen Conversations" to discuss "Nutrition for Survivors" with Laura Watkins, RD, on Friday, April 20. Reserve your seat today!
