2016 Race Email Banner v3 small

This year's Race theme is What PINK Makes Possible. Komen and PINK have changed the way we talk about and treat breast cancer. Komen’s almost $900 million investment in research and $1.95 billion in community grants has provided education, patient navigation, screenings, and emergency financial support to thousands, made major breakthroughs possible in breast cancer, and resulted in some very real victories:

  • More early detection and effective treatment. Currently, about 70 percent of women 40 and older receive regular mammograms, the single most effective screening tool to find breast cancer early. Since 1990, early detection and effective treatment have resulted in a 34 percent decline in breast cancer mortality in the U.S.
  • More hope. In 1980, the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer was about 74 percent. Today, it’s 99 percent.
  • More research. The federal government now devotes more than $850 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention, compared to $30 million in 1982.
  • More survivors. Today, there are more than 3 million breast cancers survivors in the U.S.

And we're just getting started. Please join us on Saturday, May 7 for the 19th Annual Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure®. Together, we will raise awareness of breast cancer, celebrate survivors, and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease.

2016 February - Volunteer Spotlight - Linda Brown

Driven by the need to honor her cousin’s memory and support her friend, Linda Brown registered for the Race for the Cure in Washington, DC two years ago. Little did she know at the time, she would go on to become a top fundraiser for both the Washington, DC and Central Virginia Races for the Cure. As a passionate 2016 Central Virginia Race for the Cure Chair, Linda knows firsthand how the money raised is used to support local breast health services and education and to fund research to find the cures. We hope you will join Linda and all the Race participants and survivors on Saturday, May 7, as together we can make an impact on breast cancer and honor those in our lives who have faced the disease.
