hot flashHot flashes and night sweats can be annoying symptoms related to the hormonal changes associated with menopause. Menopause begins for women most often in the late forties or early fifties. Medically, a woman is considered in menopause 12 months after her menstrual periods have stopped. However, hot flashes and other symptoms may occur a few years before menopause begins and may continue for five or more years. The severity and duration of symptoms vary from woman to woman.  Learn more »

Grantee Spotlight:  Central Virginia Health Services, Inc.

2012 July - Grantee Spotlight - Central VA Health Services IWith the support of Komen funding, Central Virginia Health Services is providing critical breast health screenings and education to 315 uninsured, low income women at 14 clinics across Central Virginia. This grant award gives uninsured women the opportunity to access mammography services that are otherwise not available to them.   Learn more »

2012 July - Volunteer Spotlight - Jen Miller

Jen Miller’s first volunteer stint with Komen Central Virginia was in 2006 as a Race for the Cure Team Captain. Two years later, she was tapped to serve on the Race Planning Committee. As an energetic, dedicated member of the Committee that organizes the Race for the Cure every year, Jen has served as the Volunteer Co-Chair, the Team Relations Co-Chair, and most recently as the overall Race Chair for 2012. Jen’s enthusiastic and supportive leadership of the Race yielded 340 active volunteers, over 6,000 participants, more than $500,000 in revenue, and a day filled with immeasurable joy.  Learn more »
