Thank You banner

As we close another breast cancer awareness season, Komen Central Virginia would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all of you for your support. Over the past few weeks, thousands of pieces of educational materials have been shared with our community because YOU requested them and distributed them at your workplace, church, club or health fair. Many of you have created or attended special events to raise funds that help us continue to support education, screening, and treatment for our neighbors and fund research that will create new and more effective treatments. For every volunteer who manned an event, we are grateful. Each contribution, large or small, helps us continue toward our vision of a world without breast cancer. Your partnership is inspiring.

Rocket 4 the Cure - We Have Lift-off!!

Dylan & Sanzio

On Sunday, October 26, a new Guinness World Record was set. Dylan Whitesel, a Midlothian High School student, and Sanzio Angeli, a Clover Hill High School student, launched 3,973 rockets simultaneously. Their achievement not only set a new world record, it also raised over $20,000 for breast cancer services, education, and research.

While many thought their project was cost-prohibitive and frankly just plain nuts, Dylan and Sanzio could not be deterred. Sanzio has been interested in space travel and model rocketry for years. For Dylan, there is an added personal interest. His family carries the BRCA2 gene. His mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2008.

Sanzio and Dylan are nothing short of amazing! Click here to view a video about Rocket 4 the Cure.

Grantee Spotlight:  Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville

2014 11 Grantee Spotlight - Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensvil

Thanks to generous funding from Walgreen’s, Komen Central Virginia was recently able to award $25,835 to the Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville. The YMCA’s “Passion for Pink” education program raises awareness of the importance of early detection and available breast health resources, with a particular emphasis on African American women in the City of Emporia and Counties of Brunswick, Greensville, and Sussex. Trained breast health facilitators educate women on a one-on-one basis at low-income apartment complex offices, beauty salons, and community events.  In addition, educational group sessions are conducted at predominantly African American churches.  The program goal is to reach 500 women.

“Passion for Pink” also promotes access to breast health services for low income, uninsured women in the community.  If needed, uninsured women are given a voucher for a free clinical breast exam, free mammogram, and free transportation to their screening appointments.

For more information about the grant program, contact Kristin Vaughan at 434-348-9622 or kvaughan@ymcaofeg.org. For more information about the Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville, visit www.emporiagreensvilleymca.org.
