2014 NBCAM - Maura

As a third-degree black belt, Maura Bivens knows how to fight. So when she was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, she researched her options until she discovered an aggressive new treatment. Thankfully it was a success and, three years later, she shows no evidence of the disease. At Susan G. Komen®, we're inspired by this kind of tenacious spirit. That's why we keep investing in research that leads to medical breakthroughs, so others like Maura can help fight back.

It's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Survivors like Maura are in the spotlight, and now is the best time to turn awareness into action to save lives. This month alone, an estimated 142,000 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed worldwide. YOU give US strength to fight breast cancer on all fronts. Your support helps us save lives. Susan G. Komen wants to be there for you and your loved ones who could be braving this disease at any moment.

Be a source of strength and join us in the fight against breast cancer. If you are newly diagnosed or know someone who is, contact us for a Newly Diagnosed information packet. Fill out our Volunteer Application and let us know how you want to get involved. Or, make a donation to support lifesaving research and to provide assistance to people battling breast cancer here in our community. Thank you!

2014 October - Volunteer Spotlight - Brian Bennett

After his wife’s closest friend was diagnosed twice with breast cancer and underwent surgery, Brian Bennett took action and joined the Komen Central Virginia Board of Directors in June 2013. Brian says, “As a witness to the incredible courage displayed by our dear friend throughout this entire process, I was also reminded of just how hideous this disease can be.”

Brian’s greatest joy in volunteering for Komen is the ability to see first-hand how the organization is helping so many people whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. He is particularly compelled by Komen's mission to eradicate breast cancer forever. He is proud to recount that Komen Central Virginia funds many great local organizations who provide breast services to those most in need. Knowing that nearly 75% of the donations received from our community are deployed back into our community makes this effort even more satisfying for Brian. Komen Central Virginia is grateful for the passion and innovation that Brian’s leadership brings to the breast cancer community.
