2014 Race Thanks

We came over 5,000 strong, many in our finest tutus, to Race for the Cure! The weather was beautiful. The spirit of hope filled the air. The Survivors treated us to a Happy Dance to remember.

Most importantly, we raised funds to support our neighbors, who face a diagnosis of breast cancer. Through the generosity shown at this event, we will be able to add significantly to the more than $6 million that Komen Central Virginia has been able to contribute over 16 years to fund community grants and research.

You, the participants and donors of this Race for the Cure, made this possible. Without your ongoing support, community grants and research contributions would stop. Susan G. Komen is still a grassroots organization that depends on the dedication of local communities to make a difference. THANK YOU!

As always, our goals are huge because the need is great. We will continue to accept donations toward this event until June 30. Additional donations to the 2014 Race for the Cure can be made at http://komencentralva.org/komen-race-for-the-cure/donate.

Funds Available for Fiscal Year 2015

Your financial support, fundraising efforts, and volunteer time have made it possible for Komen Central Virginia to announce the availability of grant funds for fiscal year 2015. Nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and educational institutions serving the communities in our Affiliate service area are eligible for funding. Applications up to $40,000 are being accepted until August 28, 2014, for community grant programs that reduce breast cancer mortality, especially among those who are disproportionately affected by this disease. Additionally, our small grants program is accepting applications year round for projects up to $5,000.

For application instructions, please visit the Grants section of our web site. For more information about the Affiliate grant program, contact Pem Hall at pbhall@komencentralva.org or 804-320-1772.

Thanks to you, Komen continues to save lives from breast cancer by funding the most effective screening, education, and treatment programs here in Central Virginia.

2014 June - Volunteer Spotlight - Kaitlynn Pritchett

Can you imagine the effort that goes into producing an event for over 5,000 participants! Communications, data entry, volunteer coordination, meetings, and lots of phone calls. Our annual Race for the Cure is made possible by hundreds of volunteers, four staff members, and one brave Race Intern who supports them all. This year, Kaitlynn Pritchett volunteered as our super Race Intern while completing her junior year at University of Richmond. Kaitlynn wanted to be involved with Komen and be a part of finding a cure. She knows firsthand what it is like for a loved one to have cancer and what a family goes through - her father died in 2010 of colon cancer. Kaitlynn says, “I want be a part of the fight for any type of cancer, so no one has to go through what I did.” Her passion echoes the Komen promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering for Komen, Kaitlynn replies, “knowing I am helping to make a difference in breast cancer patients' lives. I found this to be especially true at the Race when I saw the smiles on the survivors’ faces and their gratitude for Komen.” Kaitlynn also enjoys working with the Affiliate staff. “No matter what, they are always happy and fun to be around.” As you can imagine, Kaitlynn is well-loved around the office! Komen Central Virginia is extraordinarily grateful for Kaitlynn’s efforts and her interest in continuing her volunteer work as the Community Profile intern.
