Why You Are Important:  A True Story of How Your Support Helps Others

Recently I answered my telephone and talked with a young woman – just 43 years old – who said that she had found a lump in her breast and thought she “ought to see a doctor.” She went on to tell me that she is the single mother of a teenage daughter and she works as a waitress for $2.19 per hour. As the conversation developed she began to cry and said that she did not have health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare and could not afford a doctor visit. She said that she also felt that an examination would lead to more unaffordable testing. I reassured her and told her that we could enroll her in our Susan G. Komen-supported program which would pay for her doctor visit and mammography. I told her that if her exam or imaging required more testing that we could enroll her in Every Woman’s Life. She was relieved to know that a Komen grant was available to her. Learn more »

Volunteer Spotlight:  Carol Harris

2012 April Spotlight - Carol HarrisCarol Harris first became involved with Komen at the 2006 Race for the Cure, within a year of her diagnosis with breast cancer. She tells the story of her first Race, “when my sister said all I needed to do was sit under the Logistics tent. I didn't have any idea what I was doing or what she needed me to do! I cried for most of my first Race for the Cure because it was so inspiring to see so many wonderful women, as well as to see how this disease touches so many lives.” Learn more »
