Volunteer Opportunities for Kids on Race Day

I AM THE CURE young girls

Calling all kids! Do you like to cheer and shout? Then join us as an I AM THE CURE.® Cure Leader during the Race! We will provide you with a special t-shirt and pompoms for you to cheer on the runners and walkers along the Race course. If you are under age 18 and want to volunteer at the Race, please contact our office at info@komencentralva.org or (804) 320-1772.

I AM THE CURE.® is an educational program that motivates Race participants to take an active role in their own breast health. Its chants and cheers emphasize the importance of early detection and provide simple, action-oriented messages that Race participants can put into practice. To learn more about being an I AM THE CURE.® volunteer, view the I AM THE CURE.® Overview video.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Jen Merritt & Steve Sedlock

2013 March - Jen MerrittJen Merritt first volunteered for Komen Central Virginia in the Race for the Cure in 2005. Since then, she has held several roles on the Race Committee. This year, she is Co-Chair of the Kids for the Cure Run. Jen enjoys working alongside great people with the goal of eradicating the disease that took her grandmother's life when her mom was just a toddler. When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering for Komen, Jen answered, "the people, the smiles, and the hope!"

2013 March - Steve SedlockSteve has a special reason for wanting to be a part of the Race for the Cure. He's here for the women in his life. His mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor, and his grandmother is also a breast cancer survivor.

Steve Sedlock first volunteered for the Race for the Cure in 2004 helping with the kids' activities. The next year, he stepped into the Kids for the Cure Run Co-Chair role, the first year a separate run was conducted just for kids, and has been in that role since then. According to Steve, "the first few years were nerve wracking, but we have been able to settle into a solid routine of organizing and staging this run. It has been all fun every since!" He enjoys making the Kids Run an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
