Think Pink and Get Screened

Running Ribbon 96x96It’s October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we pause to celebrate breast cancer survivors, remember those we have lost, and double our efforts to let others know the importance of breast health and early detection. Since we began using the color pink 30 years ago to bring us together in the fight to end breast cancer, the five-year relative survival rate for early stage breast cancer (cancer that has not spread beyond the breast) has increased from 74 to 99 percent.

While much progress has been made, women in the United States still  have a "1 in 8” (or about 12 percent) lifetime risk of getting breast cancer. We hope you will join us in becoming Breast Self-Aware - knowing your risk, getting screened, knowing what is normal for you, and making healthy lifestyle choices.

Komen also has a great tool to help you take charge of your health. Complete this simple form and each year on the date you choose, you will receive a reminder to schedule your mammogram or clinical breast exam. By taking this simple step, you may lower your risk of dying from breast cancer!

Volunteer Spotlight:  Evelyn Brooks

2012 October - Evelyn Brooks

Evelyn Brooks wanted to get involved with Komen because she thought it was important to let people know where they can get information on breast cancer. Because, Evelyn says, “Komen provides the best breast cancer information available.” As a six year breast cancer survivor, Evelyn knows best where to get answers to questions about diagnosis and treatment.  Learn more »
