Does Your New Year’s Resolution Include Taking Good Care of Yourself?

Komen Stock - doctor and patientFor 2016 and the future, we hope you will resolve to GET SCREENED for breast cancer. Screening tests can find cancer early, when chances for survival are highest.

  • Talk with a doctor about which screening tests are right for you, if you are at a higher risk
  • Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
  • Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40
We’ll even help you remember to schedule your screening appointment with this nifty reminder tool.

Welcome Ryan Foulds

Please join us in welcoming Ryan Foulds as the new Komen Central Virginia Operations and Volunteer Coordinator. As a recent University of Richmond graduate and former Bonner scholar, Ryan considers herself fortunate to have spent her junior year studying in St. Petersburg, Russia, and to have dedicated over 1,400 hours during college to community service and enrichment activities.

Ryan’s volunteer experiences included a Richmond school, a health clinic, pet shelters, a community house, a volunteer hub, and the Bonner office. It was Ryan’s love of working with people, her desire to give back to the community, and her aunt’s fight with breast cancer that brought her to Komen. Ryan believes her aunt was incredibly lucky to have had access to the tests that detect breast cancer early and to the resources to be cured. Ryan’s vision is to live in a world where more cancer patients have experiences like that of her aunt, rather than finding a tumor when it’s harder to cure, or worse. She says, “Every woman should have access to caring doctors and the tests necessary to battle cancer at its earliest stages.”

Although Ryan is only a few months into her job as Volunteer and Operations Coordinator, she has “already met so many wonderful people.” She looks forward to meeting more of the Komen family, cultivating relationships with new volunteers, and helping the Affiliate to serve more women in Central Virginia. We are excited to have Ryan as a member of the Komen Central Virginia team, and we hope you will contact her at rfoulds@komencentralva.org if you are interested in volunteering!

2016 January - Volunteer Spotlight - Melinda Bell

Melinda Bell’s journey with Komen Central Virginia began in 2003 when she signed up for the Race for the Cure® after surgeries and treatment for Stage IIIB breast cancer. With her Race participation, she hoped to celebrate her life as a survivor. She found the day inspiring as she looked around and saw many women in pink t-shirts and some with short hair like her, as evidence of chemotherapy. She was honored to be counted among the survivors.

As a Girl Scout Brownie leader, she looked to Komen as a perfect opportunity to teach her daughter’s troop community involvement and citizenship. Thanks to her leadership, the Girl Scouts have supported Komen Central Virginia in many ways including handing out water and medals to Race participants, painting faces in the children’s area at the Race, forming a team in the Race for the Cure, and stuffing bags for the Race and other events.

Melinda enjoys the positive energy of Komen Staff and the encouragement of youth involvement. Over the past twelve years, she has worked with us on educational projects such as Mommy and Me Teas (her daughter’s Girl Scout Bronze Award Project) and the formation of the Komen Teen Advisory Board (KTAB) which presents the In Color Station at the Race (her daughter’s Girl Scout Gold Award Project). Seeing the younger generation becoming involved in honor of their loved ones and supporting the Komen vision of a world without breast cancer motivates her. She is excited to see KTAB expand their involvement by hosting Pink Out events and other community activities.

Melinda shared a very personal story of how Komen has directly impacted her and her family. She and her daughter received genetic testing and counseling from Dr. John Quillin at VCU. The services they received from Dr. Quillin included the findings from his work funded by a Komen Research Grant. For Melinda, being able to see how the money she raised directly benefited her and her family was incredibly exciting. Thankfully, her genetic testing showed she does not carry any of the breast cancer gene mutations, which is important information for her daughter and granddaughters to know to better understand their risk of breast cancer.

Komen Central Virginia would like to thank Melinda for all her involvement over the years. Melinda and those whom she has brought to Komen are helping us saves lives in our community.
