The Impact of Race Teams

2014 Race teams banner

Participating in the Susan G. Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure® with a team increases the fun, the laughter, and maybe even the tears you share on Race day. Our teams are the backbone of our Race. Each year, about 60% of our Race participants are on a team. And, on average, about 75% of the funds raised by the Race are brought in by team members.

Race teams are formed for many reasons. Team Tong Strong honors two people – Team Captain Linda Brown’s cousin, Janet Morrissett, who lost her battle to breast cancer at a young age and Linda’s friend, Lisa Tong, a breast cancer survivor.

Lisa remembers a girl’s night out with Linda just last year. There were nine ladies around a table learning about Linda’s participation in the Race for the Cure. Linda was passionately talking about how 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Lisa remembers looking around the table and thinking, "wow, that is going to be one of us." Diagnosed with breast cancer a few months later, she never thought it would be her.

So this year, Lisa and Linda will be Racing together to honor Janet and celebrate Lisa’s survivorship. They are currently our top fundraising team raising funds that will allow women in our community to receive the breast health services they so desperately need.

We invite you to join Team Tong Strong at the 2015 Komen Central Virginia Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 9 as we Race together to run breast cancer out of town.

Celebrating Everyday Heroes

2015 Race - everyday heroes banner with lady

This year's Race theme is "everyday heroes - honor one. save one. be one." What is an everyday hero? They are the mothers, sisters, husbands, friends, co-workers, team captains, team members, doctors, sponsors, volunteers, and survivors who stand with us in the fight against breast cancer.

Help us make the Race even MORE unique this year by showing your support with a superhero cape! Here’s how:

  1. Register for the Race - This year's Race is our 18th annual Race, and we need you there to make this year's Race awesome!

  2. Make Your Superhero Cape - If you are going to celebrate everyday heroes with us, you're going to need a superhero cape! Here are some quick and easy instructions to make a NO SEW superhero cape. A limited number of superhero capes will be available for purchase at Packet Pickup.

  3. Join the Fun and Tell Us about Your Everyday Heroes - Tell us who your everyday heroes are and why. Send us a picture of them that we can post on our social media (email to info@komencentralva.org). Or, post your picture on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #KomenHero.

  4. Wear a Superhero Cape to the Race - If you plan to wear a costume on Race day, make it a superhero cape! While capes or any costume are optional, we would love to see the superhero cape become a symbol of our support for those in our community who have been affected by breast cancer.

2015 April - Volunteer Spotlight - Shelley Picou

Shelley Picou, a dedicated volunteer, has been serving our community with Komen Central Virginia for nine years. She has been an active member of the Education/Volunteer Committee, and has served as a Komen Educator, Race Volunteer, and frequently helps in the office. Shelley is passionate about the work that she does because she is a two-time breast cancer survivor and wants to be a part of finding the cure. She became involved with Komen in 2002 when she walked in her first Komen 3-Day in Seattle. She began training for the walk three weeks after her last radiation treatment. Shelley states, “This whole experience motivated me in wanting to do more, and by more I mean filling the need to promote breast health and the importance of early detection.”

We are so thankful for Shelley, and we cannot thank her enough for the time and passion she has devoted to Komen Central Virginia over the years. She has been a true advocate, and we love seeing her reach her goal to “be the hope that someone will need” just as a survivor did for her fourteen years ago. We truly appreciate her service and look forward to her continued involvement as a volunteer, Race participant, and trusted source of advice and knowledge.
