Join Us for the 9th Annual Survivor Celebration on October 3

Jody Kerns head shotMake plans now to join us for our 9th Annual Survivor Celebration on Friday, October 3. Each year, we gather for a special luncheon to celebrate breast cancer survivors who have been diagnosed, fought through treatment, and come out on the other side surviving and thriving! This is a unique opportunity for survivors, their co-survivors, and guests to network, celebrate, pamper themselves, and support each other during an afternoon at Richmond’s landmark Jefferson Hotel.

The theme for this year is “Laughter is the best medicine!” Come hear comedian, breast cancer survivor, and The View “Funniest Housewife in America” finalist, Jody Kerns, share why humor and a positive outlook can make a difference in living life to the fullest, even when facing cancer. When she’s done, your cheeks and sides will hurt!

Tickets are $25 for breast cancer survivors and $35 for all other guests. Tables of 10 may be purchased for $250. This is one of our most popular and inspirational events each year, so don’t wait to get tickets.

A Great Loss to the Breast Cancer Community

Ellen Shaw

We are stunned and saddened about the passing of Dr. Ellen Shaw de Paredes. Ellen was a tremendous partner with community organizations in our fight against breast cancer. She was a true champion of women's breast health, working to provide much needed breast care to women in need. Komen has been proud to support Ellen's Free Mammography Outreach Program.

Our thoughts are with her family and the professional family at Paredes Institute and Paredes Foundation.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Shirley Helm

2014 September - Volunteer Spotlight - Shirley HelmHers is a story of irony. Volunteering as a dedicated Komen Grant Review Committee member and chair and working in clinical research services at VCU, Shirley Helm surprisingly received her own diagnosis of breast cancer in 2009.

Shirley first connected with Komen Central Virginia in 2002, when a friend invited her to a volunteer recruitment event.  She saw that Komen was an organization committed to the improvement of health care for the underserved and that a large percentage of the monies Komen raised from the community stayed within the community.   Shirley felt that her skillset meshed best with the grant application review process that Komen was defining at that time and signed on.  Little did she know that 12 years later she would still be involved with Komen’s mission - both from a personal standpoint as well as through the Affiliate’s grant program.

Shirley says “It has been a joy to be a small part of the evolution of the grant process - from education of those submitting grants, to expansion of the grantee pool, increased monies for projects which serve the local community, grantee site visits (a highlight of the committee),  the grantee awards luncheon, and the list goes on.”

Once she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Shirley experienced firsthand what Komen truly means to many, many women.  Dealing personally with breast cancer makes her feel more connected to those whom Komen serves. She says, “I truly believe I am one of the fortunate ones who was diagnosed early, had access to a tremendous health care team, a loving family, strong support at work, a faith support system, and Komen friends and resources. I can only hope this for everyone diagnosed with breast cancer and feel strongly that Komen provides as much of this as possible to those who may not be as fortunate as I.”

Komen Central Virginia is thankful for the leadership Shirley has given to our Grants Program through her many years of service, strengthening our investment in breast cancer and breast health services in Central Virginia.
